It is important for a hosting company to have checks and balances in place to prevent the creation of illegal, inappropriate, or abusive websites. By individually validating each website, the hosting company can provide greater storage, bandwidth, and features for their clients.
Different hosts have different policies for approval and activation, and acceptance time can range from minutes to weeks. Generally, hosts will require personal information or information about your website. The more information you provide, the greater your chances of being accepted. The more information that is required, and the longer you have to wait, the greater the server security and stability because it is harder for illegal, inappropriate, or abusive websites to gain access. A shorter wait will generally mean there are more active support staff on hand to help you.
Free web hosting service
A free web hosting service is a web hosting service that is free, usually advertisement (yoursite.example.com) or a directory (www.example.com) In contrast, paid web hosts will usually provide a -supported. Free web hosts will usually provide a subdomainsecond-level domain along with the hosting (www.yourname.com). Many free hosts do allow use of separately-purchased domains. Rarely, a free host may also operate as a domain name registrar.
One-click hosting
One-click hosting generally describes web services that allows internet users to easily upload one or more files from their hard drives onto the one-click host's server free of charge.
Most such services simply return a URL which can be given to other people, who can then fetch the file later on. As of 2005 these sites have drastically increased in popularity, and subsequently, many of the smaller, less efficient sites have failed. Many internet forums exist in order to share such links; this type of file sharing has, to a degree, taken over from P2P filesharing services
The sites make money through advertising or charging for premium services such as increased downloading capacity, removing any wait restrictions the site may have or prolonging how long uploaded files remain on the site. Many sites implement a CAPTCHA to prevent automated downloading.Operation and services
The site allows any user to upload files of up to 200 MB (at rapidshare.com) and up to 300 MB (at rapidshare.de).The user is then supplied with a unique download URL which enables anyone, with whom the uploader shares it, to download the file. No user is allowed to search the server for content; all files have to be downloaded by following a given URL.
RapidShare states that they have 240 gigabit/s of Internet connectivity and 4.5 petabytes of storage for users.
Non-paying users are required to wait, usually 25 to 90 seconds, before the download starts and their download-speed is also limited to 64 KByte/s.
Registration and payment allow benefits such as unlimited download-speed, download of several files simultaneously, queue-skipping, and the facility to interrupt and re-start downloads. Every premium account is limited to a maximum of 10 GBytes per day, but the user is allowed to "save" traffic up to a maximum of 50 GBytes and can then spend the saved traffic all at once.
Website updates
On June 3, 2008, RapidShare redesigned their website. Premium users can now download up to 50 gigabytes of data within 5 days; doubling the quota from the original 25 gigabytes per 5 days.
On June 26, 2008, the maximum download per premium user was further changed from 50 gigabytes per 5 days to 10 gigabytes per day. At the same time Rapidshare limited the number of IP addresses that can download from one account to 1.
On July 2, 2008, the maximum download limit was modified yet again. Each premium user gets 10 gigabytes of download bandwidth per day but any unused bandwidth is saved or rolled over to the next day. There is a limit of 50 gigabytes total that can be saved through this method.
